Using Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Cooperative Watershed Management Program grant funding, AWCA completed the Cooperative Watershed Management Plan for Aravaipa Canyon in 2023. This plan documents the baseline watershed assessment, presenting a collection of data to provide insights into key watershed conditions, like water quantity, water quality, land cover, geology, infrastructure, plants, and wildlife. We worked with diverse stakeholders to identify and document desired conditions, and will develop project implementation plans to address these conditions.
Our Watershed Management Plan should be used with our GIS Hub. This hub provides a central collection point for data that complements the plan and provides a variety of visualize options to help improve understanding of watershed conditions.
If you have questions about the watershed, how to find information, maps you'd like to see, or feedback on our plan, email us at awca@aravaipa.org!
Under a Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Applied Science Tools grant, high accuracy aerial and ground surveys have been completed to improve digital elevation models in critical regions of the Aravaipa Canyon Watershed. This data will allow improved modeling of infiltration, erosion, and runoff at the landscape and project scale. AWCA will use this information to help select and develop projects for implementation.
Although this data set is prohibitively large for AWCA to post on our GIS Hub or website, we are happy to share localized information like improved topographical maps, finer scale landscape slope, and other information to help answer stakeholder questions. If you have any questions on accessing data, email us your questions at AWCA@aravaipa.org.
The following map shows the overlap between the Willcox Groundwater Basin and the AWCA Planning Boundary. The AWCA planning boundary is based on HUC-12 basins with some extensions to keep continuous properties in the planning area. The map also overlays private parcels and wells within the AWCA planning boundary for informational purposes. Although some parcels, wells, and portions of the AWCA planning boundary overlap the Willcox Groundwater Basin in the South and Southeastern portions of the map, the effects of the declaration of the Willcox AMA on AWCA activities are expected to be minimal. For more information on the Willcox AMA, please see the Arizona Department of Water Resources Frequently Asked Questions Website: https://www.azwater.gov/find-info-on/how-do-i/willcox-groundwater-basin
